| Reunion Overview |
La Reunion lies in the Indian Ocean , approx 220km south-west of Mauritius and 800 km east of Madagascar.
This is a volcanic island with two major mountain zones, the Cirques of Cilanos, Salazie and Mafate, and the active volcano Piton-de-la-fornaise. The highest peak, Piton des Neiges, rises 3,069 m above sea level. |
| Reunion Essentials |
Cilaos - This cirque is accessible by car from St Louis and is well known for its ilets, small tablelands lost between gullies and cliffs like little islands. Its thermal sources have made Cilaos famous all round the Indian Ocean.
Salazie - Half an hour drive from St Andre, it is easy to access and has wonderful waterfalls, prolific vegetation and dramatic views. The chouchou is the main produce grown here, this vegetable can be eaten in salted meals as well as cakes.
Piton de la Fournaise - This volcano is still active today and is called Peak of Blazing Fire, it is a desert area with lunar countrysides. Crossing the Plaine des Sables at sunrise on the way to the volcano is enchanting with the glowing colours of the sand that change with luminosity.
Miraulous Church - This little church is located on the coast road on the West Side of La Reunion. During a volcanic erruption, the church was in the path of lava flowing to the sea. The lava separated into two streams and saved the curch, the entire area around the church is under lava.
The forest of Notre Dame de la Paix - This primary forest is composed of huge tamarins des Hauts, endemic orchids that you will discover by taking the botanic path in the mountain. |
